What is cumulative GPA?
Cumulative GPA averages performance across all counted courses—not just one term. Learn how it differs from semester GPA and how schools weight credits.
Semester vs cumulative
Semester (or term) GPA summarizes one grading period. Cumulative GPA combines every counted term using your school’s rules—often total quality points divided by total credit hours in college, or total grade points divided by total courses in some high school systems.
Because policies differ, online calculators are for planning. Verify with your registrar when precision matters for graduation, Latin honors, athletic eligibility, or scholarship renewal.
A strong semester can lift a weak cumulative average, but the lift shrinks as you accumulate more credits. Early college terms are the highest-leverage moments to raise the running total.
What usually counts (and what might not)
Schools may exclude pass/fail, audited classes, remedial courses, or certain transfer credits from cumulative GPA while still listing them on the transcript. Others fold dual-enrollment grades into the high school cumulative line.
Repeated courses may replace the earlier grade, average both attempts, or keep both in the calculation. Those choices change whether “cumulative” matches your personal sense of progress.
Some graduate and professional programs recalculate a separate GPA from prerequisite courses only. Your undergraduate cumulative number remains on the transcript, but the program’s working average can differ.
How to monitor cumulative GPA
Track quality points (or grade points) and attempted credits each term. Cumulative GPA is not the average of semester GPAs unless every term has identical credit loads—credit-weighted math is required.
Before finals, model “what if” scenarios: if you raise two courses from B to A, how much does the cumulative line move? That exercise is more useful than staring at a single target number.
