FAQ for this calculator

What does an impossible answer mean?
If the required final exceeds 100% (or is negative), the math says the target cannot be reached with the weights you entered—adjust the goal, confirm the weight, or revisit your current average.
Should I enter the final weight as 40 or 0.40?
Use the percent form printed on the syllabus (e.g., 40). The tool converts internally when solving the equation.
Does this include extra credit buckets?
Only if you bake them into your current course percent C before solving. Add extra credit rows in the grade calculator first, then copy the updated average here.

How to use the final grade calculator

Plug in your current standing, target grade, and the exam weight from your syllabus. We solve for the final percentage you need.

  • Let C be your current grade percent, D the desired final percent, and w the final weight as a decimal.
  • Required final F satisfies D = C·(1−w) + F·w, so F = (D − C·(1−w)) ÷ w.

When to use this calculator

  • Model every assignment before finals arrive.
  • Study tactics when the term still has room left.
  • Cross-check category math in the Grade Calculator if your current percent C still moves week to week.

Examples & walkthrough

  1. Gather C from your gradebook, D from the syllabus target, and w from the final exam line.
  2. Write w as a decimal (for example, 40% → 0.40).
  3. Solve F = (D − C·(1−w)) ÷ w with the calculator to avoid algebra mistakes.
  4. Interpret impossible F values (above 100 or below 0) as a sign to revisit targets or weights.
  5. Recompute whenever partial grades change before the final.
