Stone Calculator
Estimate crushed stone, gravel, or aggregate for driveways, bases, and drainage. Same math as bulk rock with stone-typical density defaults.
FAQ for this calculator
- How much stone do I need for a driveway?
- Measure length × width, use 4–6 in depth for a base course, add 5–10% waste, then convert to tons with your stone density.
- Crushed stone vs gravel?
- Both use the same volume math; density and compaction differ slightly—adjust the density field.
- Is stone the same as rock?
- Colloquially overlap—this calculator defaults to crushed aggregate density; the rock calculator uses lighter decorative rock defaults.
- Cubic yards or tons?
- Quarries often sell by the ton; we show both from volume × density.
How to use the stone calculator
Stone tonnage from coverage area, compacted depth, waste allowance, and material density—the standard quarry ordering workflow.
- Enter pad or path dimensions.
- Set depth in inches for base or surface course.
- Calculate for cubic yards and tons to order.
When to use this calculator
- Driveway gravel base before asphalt or concrete.
- French drain surround (#57 stone).
- Patio paver sub-base quantity checks.
Examples & walkthrough
- 12 ft × 40 ft × 4 in, 10% waste, 100 lb/ft³ → useful for truckload planning.
- Match density to your supplier sheet—granite vs limestone differs.
